What is El Silbón?
El Silbón ("The Whistler") is a ghostly figure from Venezuelan llanero folklore, described as a tall, gaunt man carrying a sack of bones over his shoulder, sometimes said to be missing his eyes or wearing a wide-brimmed hat. He wanders the plains at night accompanied by two spectral hounds, and his eerie whistle is said to grow fainter the closer he is — an inversion meant to disorient travelers. The legend is traditionally traced to the mid-nineteenth century, to the town of Guanarito in Portuguesa state, and tells of a young man who killed his own father, in some versions after being denied a dish of animal entrails, and was cursed by his grandfather to roam eternally dragging the bones. The tale spread through oral storytelling across Los Llanos and neighboring regions from at least the early twentieth century, reinforced by generations of parents warning children not to stay out after dark. Skeptics attribute sightings to wind whistling through plains vegetation, sleep paralysis, and the sheer cultural strength of a well-known cautionary tale rather than an actual entity.
