What is J'ba Fofi?
J'ba Fofi, meaning "giant spider" in a Congolese language, is a cryptid said to inhabit the remote rainforests of the Congo Basin, described by local informants as having a leg span comparable to a dinner plate, a dark hairy body, and the reported ability to spin webs strong enough to trap small birds or snare a person's foot. Accounts, gathered by Western cryptozoologists through interviews with hunters and villagers, describe sightings deep in dense, rarely explored forest, with some versions claiming the spiders build ground burrows rather than aerial webs. The legend reached wider Western audiences during the 1990s, when cryptozoologist William Gibbons collected native testimony about the giant spiders while leading Congo Basin expeditions primarily searching for Mokele-mbembe. No specimen, web or photograph has ever been produced despite several dedicated expeditions. Entomologists note that while the Congo Basin does host genuinely large arachnids, including huntsman and baboon spiders that can startle unfamiliar observers, nothing approaching the scale described is documented. Most researchers regard J'ba Fofi as an exaggeration of real encounters, amplified by the forest's reputation for concealing the unknown.
