What is Mongolian Death Worm?
The Mongolian Death Worm, known locally as olgoi-khorkhoi ('intestine worm') for its resemblance to a cow's intestine, is described as a thick, dark red, limbless creature roughly a meter long that lurks beneath the sand dunes of the Gobi Desert. Local herders and nomadic communities have long claimed it can kill from a distance, either by spitting corrosive venom or by discharging a powerful electric shock, said to bring death "the instant it touches you," and that it surfaces only during the brief hot, wet season. The legend reached Western audiences after American paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews collected nomad testimony about the creature during his 1922 Central Asiatic Expeditions into the Gobi, later publishing the accounts without ever finding physical evidence himself. Cryptozoological expeditions in the late 20th and early 21st centuries searched for the creature without success. Skeptics suggest the tale may stem from real desert animals such as worm lizards or sand skinks, filtered through folklore and the genuine, disorienting dangers of the Gobi's terrain.
