What is Ninki Nanka?
Along the swamps and mangrove creeks that flank the Gambia River, elders in Gambia, Senegal, and Guinea-Bissau warn children away from the water after dark with tales of Ninki Nanka, a dragon-like reptile said to combine a horse's head, a crocodile's body, and skin that shimmers unnaturally in moonlight. British colonial officers stationed along the river in the 1930s and 1940s recorded local testimony describing the creature as a guardian of sacred pools, its gaze alone capable of killing or driving a person permanently mad: "look upon it and you will never sleep soundly again." The legend functions as a practical deterrent in a region where crocodile attacks and disease-carrying stagnant water pose genuine, well-documented dangers to children playing near the riverbank. Cryptozoology expeditions searching the upper river in the 2000s found large crocodile tracks and local guides adamant the creature retreats deeper into the mangroves whenever outsiders come looking.
