What is Pombero?

Pombero is a small, hairy, gnome- or goblin-like spirit from Guaraní folklore in Paraguay, also known across parts of Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia, usually pictured as short, with backward-turned feet, unkempt hair, and a fondness for tobacco and honey left out as offerings. Belief in forest spirits of this kind predates the colonial era, but the figure is documented from the time of the Jesuit reductions of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when missionaries such as Antonio Ruiz de Montoya recorded Guaraní accounts of animist spirits inhabiting the forest. He is said to protect birds and wild animals, punishing hunters who take more than they need, but also to sneak into homes at night, tangle hair, hide objects, or, in some tellings, impregnate unmarried women — a story historically used to explain unexplained pregnancies. Rural Paraguayan families traditionally left cigars, cane liquor, or honey out at night to keep him appeased. Modern skeptics view Pombero tales as a living oral tradition shaped by rural isolation, fear of the dark forest, and convenient explanations for missing items or unplanned pregnancies, rather than an actual creature.
