What is Yeti (Abominable Snowman)?
The Yeti, popularly known as the Abominable Snowman, is an ape-like, bipedal creature said to roam the high snowfields and forested valleys of the Himalayas, described in Sherpa and Tibetan folklore as a shaggy, powerful being that avoids human contact and leaves enormous footprints in the snow. Sherpas reportedly call it meh-teh, "man-bear," a term at the root of the famous 1921 mistranslation that gave English speakers the name "Abominable Snowman." Belief in such a creature is deeply rooted in the region's religious traditions, where it is sometimes treated as a spirit-guardian of the mountains rather than simply an unknown animal. Western interest exploded after mountaineer Eric Shipton photographed a set of large, mysterious footprints near Everest in 1951, images that circulated worldwide and launched decades of expeditions searching for the creature. Alleged relics, hair samples and droppings collected over the years have, when tested, consistently matched known animals such as the Himalayan brown bear and Tibetan blue bear, or in some cases dogs, with no genetic evidence pointing to an unclassified primate. The Yeti remains a powerful symbol of the Himalayas, blending genuine regional folklore with the romance of high-altitude exploration.
What is the history of Yeti (Abominable Snowman)?
The yeti had been part of Himalayan tradition for centuries, but it entered Western consciousness through a single photograph, and it is worth being precise about how good that photograph is.
In 1951 the British mountaineer Eric Shipton was in the Himalaya on the Everest Reconnaissance Expedition, looking for a viable route to the summit. On 8 November, crossing the Menlung Basin west of Everest on the Nepal–Tibet border at around 4,600–4,900 metres, Shipton and the expedition doctor Michael Ward came upon a line of tracks in the snow.
Shipton photographed one of them, laying an ice axe beside it for scale. The result is the single most reproduced image in the history of cryptozoology.
What makes it different from most such photographs is its quality. The print is nearly twice the width of a human foot, the toes are strangely shaped, and the big toe sits lower and larger than a human's. And crucially, the image is sharp: the edges of the print are crisp, individual toe impressions are clearly resolved, and there is no sign of the rounding and blurring that melting produces.
Shipton and Ward were not sensationalists. They were serious mountaineers on a reconnaissance that would lead directly to the first ascent of Everest two years later, and their account was measured. That combination — credible witnesses, a clear photograph, a remote high-altitude location — is what lifted the yeti from regional folklore into a seventy-year scientific argument that is, in a narrow but real sense, still open.
Timeline: the documented record of Yeti (Abominable Snowman)
- 8 November 1951 Eric Shipton and Michael Ward, on the Everest Reconnaissance Expedition, find a line of tracks in the Menlung Basin at around 4,600–4,900 m. Shipton photographs one with an ice axe for scale.
- 1953 Two years after the photograph, the same reconnaissance line leads to the first ascent of Everest. The witnesses' credibility is an essential part of the weight the image carries.
- 1999 Michael Ward publishes an analysis of the tracks in the Alpine Journal, "The Yeti Footprints: Myth and Reality", half a century after being there.
- 2014 Bryan Sykes (Oxford) analyses hairs attributed to the yeti. A tooth from Messner's museum turns out to be domestic dog; two samples give bear DNA matching a 40,000-year-old polar bear jawbone.
- 2015 Edwards and Barnett rebut Sykes: these are old samples that may have suffered DNA degradation. Later analyses consistently assign the samples to known Asian bears.
Is there a rational explanation for Yeti (Abominable Snowman)?
The yeti is a case where the most popular sceptical explanation is precisely the weakest one, and where the good answer took sixty years to arrive.
The melting explanation does not work well here. It is endlessly repeated that Shipton's print is a known animal's track — a bear, a langur — enlarged and distorted by the sun. That mechanism is real and explains a great many yeti tracks. But it runs into trouble with this one: the detail in Shipton's photograph is very sharp, which indicates that little melting had in fact occurred. A melted print loses definition; this one keeps it. Whatever made it, the easy answer is not sufficient.
The good answer came from zoology and genetics. The mountaineer Reinhold Messner spent years tracking sightings and local texts across the Himalaya and concluded that the yeti of tradition corresponded to a Tibetan brown bear, sometimes called the Tibetan blue bear, a genuinely rare subspecies little known outside the region.
In 2014 the Oxford geneticist Bryan Sykes analysed hairs attributed to the yeti. Most came from known animals — one specimen, a tooth from Messner's own mountain museum, was domestic dog — but two samples gave a striking result: bear DNA matching that of a polar bear jawbone at least 40,000 years old found in the Norwegian Arctic. Sykes suggested an unknown ursid hybrid.
And then science did what it should. Edwards and Barnett published a rebuttal pointing out that these were old samples that might have undergone DNA degradation, producing a misidentification. Later analyses using better methods have consistently assigned "yeti" samples to known Asian bears: Himalayan brown bears, Tibetan brown bears and Asian black bears.
What remains is honest and not entirely closed: the yeti of folklore is almost certainly the Himalayan brown bear, a real animal, enormous and scarce. And the 1951 print still lacks a fully satisfying individual explanation — which is a different thing from having a supernatural one.
Can you visit Yeti (Abominable Snowman)?
The Menlung Basin, where Shipton took the photograph, sits on the Nepal–Tibet border west of Everest and is expedition ground: no commercial trekking route reaches it, it requires permits and high-altitude logistics, and it is not a tourist destination in any reasonable sense.
What is within reach of an ordinary traveller is the country the tradition came from. The Everest Base Camp trek, from Lukla via Namche Bazaar, Tengboche and Dingboche, is a twelve- to fourteen-day walk through the heart of the Khumbu, the Sherpa region where the yeti — yeh-teh — is living folklore rather than an imported curiosity. It runs March to May or October to November, requires Sagarmatha National Park and local municipality permits, and demands serious acclimatisation: altitude, not terrain, is what puts people in helicopters every season.
Along the way, Tengboche monastery is the Khumbu's principal cultural stop. And at Khumjung the most famous yeti relic is kept: an alleged yeti scalp held in the village monastery and shown to visitors. It was examined years ago and found to be made from the hide of a serow, a Himalayan goat-antelope. That is exactly what makes it worth seeing: it is an unusually clear lesson in how a relic is constructed and maintained.
