LOCATION
Why is Röykkä said to be haunted?
The village of Röykkä, in the Nurmijärvi municipality of southern Finland, is known locally less for its roughly 1,600 residents than for the abandoned buildings of the former Röykkä Hospital, a sanatorium founded in the early 20th century that first treated tuberculosis patients before becoming a psychiatric institution. After the hospital's closure, its empty wards, peeling corridors, and overgrown grounds became one of Finland's best-known urban exploration sites, drawing photographers and ghost hunters who describe cold spots, unexplained sounds, and a persistent sense of being watched inside the old wards. Locals have long swapped stories about patients who reportedly never left the grounds even after the institution shut its doors, and about lights seen moving through windows of buildings that should stand empty. The site's decay, still visible today, has made it a fixture of Finnish paranormal folklore despite its relatively low profile outside the country.
