What is the legend of Anansi the Spider?
Anansi the spider is the beloved trickster of the Akan people of Ghana, a small creature whose cunning outwits the strong and whose stories sailed across the Atlantic in the memories of enslaved Africans. In the most famous tale, Anansi longs to own all the stories in the world, which belong to the sky god Nyame. The god sets a price that seems impossible: Anansi must capture Onini the python, Osebo the leopard, the Mmoboro hornets, and Mmoatia the elusive fairy. One by one, using flattery, patience, and clever traps rather than strength, the little spider brings each fearsome creature to the heavens. Delighted, Nyame grants him the stories, and ever since they have been called Anansesem, the tales of Anansi. Through him, generations learned that wit can triumph over power, that the weak need not stay weak, and that a good story is worth any prize. Carried to the Caribbean and the Americas, Anansi became a symbol of survival and subversive intelligence, spinning his web across continents and centuries.
