What is Con rit?
Con rit is a legendary sea monster from Vietnamese folklore, described as an enormous centipede-like or serpentine beast with a segmented, armored body, sometimes said to glow or to be large enough to wrap around a boat. Tales cluster around the coastal waters and karst islands of northern Vietnam, particularly the Gulf of Tonkin, where fishermen told of massive sea centipedes attacking vessels or dragging sailors into the depths. The legend gained scientific attention in 1893, when a huge carcass washed ashore at Do Son beach; French naturalists who examined it, and a similar find decades later, concluded it was most likely a decomposed oarfish or basking shark, its ribbon-like body mistaken for a segmented monster. Colonial-era sailors and officials recorded these local accounts alongside their own, sometimes conflating con rit with genuine wreckage or unusual marine animals. The legend likely draws on real giant centipede species found on land, exaggerated encounters with oarfish or sea snakes, and the human tendency to mythologize the hazards of typhoon-prone waters full of jagged limestone islets. No scientific evidence supports a giant centipede-monster in Vietnamese coastal waters; the tale endures as striking regional maritime folklore.
