What is the legend of Tam and Cam?
Often called Vietnam's Cinderella, the tale of Tam and Cam is far older and darker than its Western cousin, told for generations in the villages of the Red River Delta. Tam is a gentle orphan raised by her cruel stepmother and idle half-sister Cam, who steal from her at every turn. When Cam tricks Tam out of her fish and a promised prize, a Buddha figure appears to comfort her, and a magic bone from her one surviving fish grants her fine clothes to attend the king's festival, where she loses a slipper and wins the king's heart. But the story does not end at the wedding. The jealous stepmother murders Tam, and Cam takes her place in the palace; Tam's soul, however, refuses to die, returning as a songbird, then a loom, then a golden persimmon tree, each time reborn to reclaim her life and her husband. In its unflinching finale justice falls hard upon the wicked. Beloved and debated for its severity, Tam Cam remains a cornerstone of Vietnamese folklore about endurance, rebirth and the price of cruelty.
