What is Krampus?
Krampus, the horned, chain-rattling companion of Saint Nicholas in Alpine folklore, punishes misbehaving children while Nicholas rewards the well-behaved, a pairing documented in Austrian, Bavarian, and Slovenian tradition since at least the 17th century. Villages across Salzburg and Styria hold annual Krampuslauf processions each December 5th, Krampusnacht, in which young men don hand-carved wooden masks and sheepskin costumes to run through the streets swinging birch switches and cowbells. Catholic church authorities periodically tried to suppress the figure, most notably during Austria's clerical-fascist period in the 1930s, when Krampus imagery was banned as un-Christian, only for the tradition to resurface stronger after the war. An old Salzburg warning to children goes: "Nicholas brings the walnuts and gold, Krampus brings the birch switch and the sack you're sold into." Folklorists trace Krampus to pre-Christian Alpine winter demon traditions absorbed into the Christian Saint Nicholas feast during medieval missionary efforts, making him one of Europe's clearest examples of folk-pagan figures surviving inside a church calendar. Modern Krampuslauf events now draw tourists rather than frightened children.
