What is Tatzelwurm?
The Tatzelwurm, whose name roughly translates as "claw worm," is a legendary creature said to dwell in the high mountain valleys and rocky slopes of the Alps, with reported sightings spanning Austria, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy. It is typically described as a short, thick-bodied reptile up to a meter or two long, with a cat-like or toad-like face, two stubby front legs, and no hind legs, sometimes said to hiss loudly or leap surprising distances when threatened. Stories circulated among Alpine farmers and shepherds for generations, likely rooted in older regional traditions of mountain-dwelling serpents and dragons. The legend peaked in 1934, when a Swiss photographer named Balkin claimed to have snapped a Tatzelwurm coiled on a rock near Meiringen; the image, showing something suspiciously rigid, like a ceramic model, prompted a magazine-sponsored expedition that found nothing and is now widely regarded as a hoax. Skeptics explain other sightings as known animals poorly seen in dim mountain light, such as large lizards, salamanders, or marmots, since no zoologically confirmed specimen, bone, or clear photograph has ever surfaced. The Tatzelwurm endures today mainly as a charming piece of Alpine folklore, featured in local museums and tourist lore across the mountain range.
