What is Lagarfljót Worm?
The Lagarfljótsormur is said to coil beneath Lagarfljót, a long glacial lake beside the East Iceland town of Egilsstaðir. The earliest written mention appears in the Icelandic Annals for the year 1345, describing a strange hump-shaped form seen rising and sinking in the lake's dark water, making it one of the oldest continuously reported lake monster traditions in Europe. Folk versions claim the worm began as a small heather-worm placed on a gold ring by a farm girl, which grew monstrously large and destructive until a Finnish or Norwegian sorcerer bound it beneath the lake with two ropes. Farmers along the shore still say: "When the Lagarfljót humps rise twice, the winter that follows will not be kind." A widely circulated 2012 video filmed by a local farmer showing a moving hump in the ice-covered lake reignited national interest, though analysts later suggested the footage showed a fishing net or bundled hay dragged by the current under tension. Icelandic geologists note the lake's unusual sediment-driven currents and floating ice masses as a plausible source for centuries of hump sightings.
