What is Mngwa?

The Mngwa, also known as Nunda, is a legendary giant cat from the folklore of coastal Tanzania, particularly the area around the Rufiji River delta and Mahenge, described as larger than a lion, with a grayish coat unlike any known local feline and a reputation for killing livestock and, in older tales, people. Swahili oral tradition and colonial-era accounts describe villagers organizing hunts after a string of fatal attacks blamed on the animal, with witnesses describing tracks broader than a lion's. The legend reached wider audiences in 1937, when British colonial officer William Hichens published an account in the journal Discovery, collecting native testimony that described the creature's fur as "grey, like that of a donkey," and speculating it might be an unusually large or aberrantly colored leopard, or a relict population of an unclassified big cat. No skeleton, skin, or photograph has ever confirmed the Mngwa's existence. The most widely accepted explanations point to an unusually large or gray-coated leopard, a case of mistaken identity compounded by fear during a genuine spate of predator attacks, or the amplification of real incidents through retelling.
