Popobawa

On Zanzibar's Pemba Island, a wave of terror in 1995 saw entire villages sleeping outdoors in groups after residents reported nighttime visits from Popobawa, a one-eyed, bat-winged shapeshifter whose name translates roughly to "bat wing." Victims, overwhelmingly men, described being pinned down and assaulted in the dark, then warned to tell others of the attack or face a repeat visit, a detail that fueled the panic's rapid spread across the island and briefly into mainland Tanzania: "if you keep silent, it will come back for you." Local leaders and even government officials weighed in publicly, with some urging calm and others acknowledging community fear was real regardless of the creature's existence. Sociologists studying the episodes describe a textbook case of collective sleep-paralysis phenomena reinforced by political anxiety and rumor, spreading through an already tense pre-election atmosphere on the island that year.
