Why is Davelis Cave said to be haunted?

On the slopes of Mount Penteli northeast of Athens, Davelis Cave sits inside an ancient marble quarry that supplied stone for the Parthenon, and takes its modern name from Christos Davelis, a 19th-century brigand said to have used it as a hideout. The site's real notoriety, however, comes from stories that spread during the Cold War: locals and Greek media reported strange lights, unexplained sounds, and even claims of a hidden military or extraterrestrial base connected by tunnels running deep beneath the mountain, fueled by the visible presence of a real, unmarked military installation nearby. Older layers of folklore describe the cave as sacred to Pan and later linked to worship of Zeus, and hikers today still describe an unease that settles over the site at dusk. Between ancient myth, wartime rumor, and modern UFO lore, Davelis Cave remains one of the most persistently reinterpreted "mystery" sites in Greece.
