LOCATION
Why is Nam Koo Terrace said to be haunted?
Nam Koo Terrace, a Grade I historic building at 55 Ship Street in Wan Chai, was built around 1918 for a wealthy Chinese opera patron and later, according to widely repeated local accounts, used during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong from 1941 to 1945 as a brothel where women were held against their will β a history that earned the building its enduring nickname, 'the Wan Chai Haunted House.' Left empty for decades after the war while ownership passed to developer Hopewell Holdings, the terrace became overgrown and derelict, and neighbors reported hearing women weeping and screaming from inside at night, along with sightings of pale figures at the upper windows. Ghost hunters and paranormal investigators regularly cite it as Hong Kong's most feared address, and even after partial restoration work began, workers reportedly refused night shifts on the site.
