Sai Ying Pun Community Complex

The nine-storey Sai Ying Pun Community Complex on Hong Kong Island's High Street stands on the site of the old Victoria Mental Hospital, built in the early twentieth century, and the granite façade with its arched verandah — all that survives of the original 1892 building — was preserved when the complex was rebuilt in 2001. Locals have long called it one of the most haunted spots in Hong Kong, pointing to the site's decades as an asylum and, according to some accounts, its brief wartime use during the Japanese occupation of 1941–1945. Visitors report cold drafts along the old verandah at night, faint moaning sounds inside the preserved façade, and a reluctance among nearby residents to walk too close after dark. Government officials have periodically had to reassure staff working in the complex's social services offices, and the building remains a fixture on Hong Kong ghost-tour routes to this day.
