Why is Rose Hall, Montego Bay said to be haunted?

Rose Hall, overlooking the coast near Montego Bay, Jamaica, is inseparable from the legend of Annie Palmer, the so-called "White Witch of Rose Hall." According to the tale that took shape over the 19th and 20th centuries, Annie married into the plantation-owning Palmer family in the early 1800s, practiced obeah and voodoo learned in Haiti, and murdered three husbands and numerous enslaved workers before being killed herself in 1831, reportedly by an enslaved man in retaliation for her cruelty. By the 1960s the once-grand Georgian great house had fallen into ruin, overrun by vegetation, and locals said it was best avoided after dark because of Annie's restless spirit. Restored soon after and reopened as a museum, Rose Hall now presents both its Georgian architecture and the White Witch story to visitors, who are told her ghost still walks the grounds at night, dressed in her riding clothes.
