LOCATION
Why is Sargasso Sea said to be haunted?
The Sargasso Sea is the only sea on Earth with no coastline, a still, current-bound patch of the North Atlantic held in place by the Gulf Stream, the North Atlantic Current, the Canary Current, and the North Atlantic Equatorial Current. Age-of-sail mariners dreaded its windless calms and thick mats of golden Sargassum weed, which could becalm a ship for days or weeks with dwindling food and water β a fate sailors called being 'in the doldrums.' That reputation for swallowing vessels without a storm in sight later folded the Sargasso into the wider Bermuda Triangle mythology of the twentieth century, with writers linking its stillness to unexplained disappearances nearby. Oceanographers note the calm is real and well understood, tied to the gyre's physics rather than anything supernatural, but the sea's eerie reputation as a graveyard of drifting, abandoned ships has never entirely faded from maritime folklore.
