What is the legend of The Djinn?
Long before the lamp-bound genie of storybooks, the djinn haunted the deserts and imagination of Arabia. In pre-Islamic belief and later in Islamic tradition, the djinn are beings created from smokeless fire, dwelling in a world parallel to our own, in ruins, deserts, caves, and empty places. Unlike angels, they possess free will: some are pious and just, others deceitful and cruel, and many simply indifferent to humankind. Travelers were warned not to linger in desolate valleys at dusk, for a djinn might lead them astray, whisper madness, or take possession of the unwary. They could shift shape into serpents, black dogs, or beautiful strangers, and were blamed for illness, misfortune, and sudden fear in lonely places. Yet a djinn might also be bound by knowledge or oath to serve, granting the powerful and the wise access to hidden things. Woven deeply into folklore from Morocco to the Gulf, the djinn embody the unseen forces of a vast and perilous landscape, reminders that the empty desert is never truly empty.
