Lake Van Monster

Turkey's largest lake, Van, sits atop an alkaline, soda-rich basin where locals have reported a large, dark-humped creature since at least the 1990s, when schoolteacher Ünal Kozak began collecting sightings and coined the name Van Canavarı for regional press. The most cited account came in 1997, when amateur video allegedly showed a long shape breaking the surface near the eastern shore, prompting municipal officials to briefly offer a reward for definitive proof: "something moved under that water that was not a boat and not a fish." Believers link the creature to the lake's unusual chemistry, deep enough and caustic enough that few large fish species survive, arguing an undiscovered endemic species could persist undisturbed. Skeptical biologists note the lake's high pH and depth make sustaining a breeding megafauna population implausible, and attribute footage to floating driftwood, wind-driven waves, and diving birds catching evening light.
