Penanggalan

Across Malay villages, the Penanggalan is feared as a woman by day and, by night, a detached floating head that drags its own stomach and entrails behind it, glowing faintly as it hunts. Colonial-era ethnographies compiled in the late 1800s and republished through the early 20th century recorded midwives keeping thorny jeruju leaves and broken glass around windows and doorframes, since the trailing organs were said to snag on the thorns before the creature could strike. Village accounts insisted the Penanggalan was once an ordinary woman who broke a vow tied to a forbidden beauty ritual, her head tearing loose the first night she failed to observe it: "she left her body sleeping, and returned only in pieces before dawn." Anthropologists suggest the legend enforced strict rules around childbirth hygiene, since new mothers and infants were the creature's preferred targets, in an era when postpartum infection was a genuine and poorly understood danger.
