Casa de Nariño

Colombia's presidential palace stands on the plot where independence leader Antonio Nariño was born — and, by most tellings, where he was later imprisoned. That history is the root of the haunting stories that have circulated among staff and first families since the building's 1908 dedication: cold hallways, whispers with no source, and a portrait of Nariño said to shift position on its own. Former president César Gaviria said publicly, 'There are definitely ghosts there... they don't scare me, but the Palace is full of ghosts, I saw them in my time.' More recently, Andrea Petro, daughter of President Gustavo Petro, told Semana magazine she has never managed to sleep a full night inside the palace because of the noises, particularly along the corridor lined with portraits of past presidents.
