What is Brosno Dragon?
The Brosno Dragon, or Brosnya, is said to inhabit Lake Brosno in the Tver region of Russia, a deep glacial lake long rumored among local villagers to have no measurable bottom. Regional folklore traces sightings back centuries, and a persistent local legend claims that in 1240 the lake creature devoured part of an invading Mongol detachment that stopped to camp on its shores, though the tale surfaces mainly in 20th-century retellings rather than medieval sources. Soviet-era expeditions in the 1980s reported sonar anomalies and unexplained large moving shapes, fueling a wave of Russian media coverage in the 1990s that dubbed it the "Russian Loch Ness Monster." Villagers near the lake still warn visitors: "Brosno keeps what it takes, and gives back only bubbles." Modern hydrologists point to naturally occurring methane gas pockets rising from decomposing organic sediment on the lake floor, which can produce sudden bubbling, localized water disturbance, and sulfurous smells easily mistaken for a surfacing creature. No carcass or clear photograph has ever emerged despite decades of amateur searches with boats and underwater cameras.
