Baba Yaga and Vasilisa the Beautiful

Collected by folklorist Alexander Afanasyev in the 19th century, the tale of Vasilisa the Beautiful is one of the best-known Russian legends about Baba Yaga, the witch who lives deep in the forest in a hut that turns on chicken legs, fenced with a wall of human skulls whose eyes glow at night. The story tells that after her mother's death, Vasilisa's stepmother sends her into the woods to fetch fire from Baba Yaga, hoping the witch will devour her. Guided by a small doll her mother left behind — which she feeds and confides in — Vasilisa survives three riders (dawn, day and night) and completes impossible tasks the witch sets her: sorting grain, separating poppy seeds from soil. Satisfied, Baba Yaga hands her a skull with burning eyes to light her way home; when it reaches the stepmother and stepsisters, its gaze reduces them to ashes. Storytellers across Russia still say the doll represents a mother's blessing, stronger than any curse — though, as with all such tales, no one claims the hut in the forest can truly be found.
