The Sunken City of Kitezh

According to Russian legend, the city of Kitezh once stood on the shore of Lake Svetloyar, in what is now Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, founded in the 12th century by Grand Prince George II of Vladimir. When the Mongol horde of Batu Khan approached in 1238, the story goes that the townspeople prayed rather than fought, and God caused the city to sink beneath the lake instead of letting it fall to the invaders — some versions say it simply became invisible, still standing whole underwater. Old Believers who fled persecution settled near the lake in later centuries, and pilgrims still walk around Svetloyar on quiet nights claiming to hear church bells ringing from beneath the surface, or to glimpse the glow of candles and domes through the water on clear days. The tale inspired Rimsky-Korsakov's opera 'The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh' (1907). Local guides are careful to say it is a story of faith and refuge from invasion, not a claim that a city truly lies beneath the lake — divers have found nothing but an ordinary lakebed.
