Why is Catacombe dei Cappuccini said to be haunted?
Beneath the Capuchin monastery in Palermo, Sicily, the Catacombe dei Cappuccini hold roughly 8,000 mummified and skeletal bodies, a tradition that began in 1599 when friars preserved the body of Brother Silvestro da Gubbio and continued for the wealthy and prominent of Palermo society through the early 20th century. Bodies were dried in special chambers, dressed in the clothing of their era, and arranged in corridors by category, monks, professionals, women, children, and virgins, creating a walkable gallery of the dead that still unsettles visitors. The catacombs' most famous resident is Rosalia Lombardo, a two-year-old girl who died in 1920 and whose remarkably intact remains, preserved through an embalming technique whose exact formula was long a closely guarded secret, have earned her the nickname "Sleeping Beauty." Visitors and staff describe an oppressive stillness in the deeper corridors, and some report the sensation of being watched by the rows of hollow-eyed faces lining the walls.
