What is Nahuelito?
Nahuelito is Argentina's answer to Scotland's Loch Ness Monster, a large aquatic creature reportedly living in Lago Nahuel Huapi in Argentine Patagonia, described variously as a long-necked, serpentine or plesiosaur-like animal disturbing the water's surface. Interest surged in 1922, when American gold miner Martín Sheffield wrote to Buenos Aires Zoo director Clemente Onelli describing a "long-necked, swan-headed creature" he had seen near Epuyén, a report that local newspapers and later the international press picked up, partly inspired by comparisons to Nessie. Onelli organized an expedition to the Patagonian lakes but found nothing. The lake's glacial origin, great depth, and cold, clear waters have long supported speculation about an unknown large animal, especially among the Patagonian settler communities of European descent who brought lake-monster storytelling traditions with them. Marine biologists and skeptics attribute sightings to large native fish, otters, wind-driven wave patterns, floating logs, and the well-documented psychological tendency to interpret ambiguous shapes on water as living creatures, noting that no bone, tissue, or conclusive photograph has ever surfaced.
