What is Yeren?

The Yeren, or "wild man," is a hairy, ape-like bipedal cryptid reported mainly in the dense forests of Shennongjia in Hubei province, China, described as tall, powerfully built, and covered in reddish or dark hair, similar in concept to the Yeti or Bigfoot. Local accounts of wild, man-like beings in remote mountain forests date back centuries in Chinese folklore, but modern interest peaked after a widely reported 1976 sighting by a group of provincial officials near Shennongjia, which prompted the Chinese government and academic institutions to fund organized scientific expeditions to search for physical evidence, collecting hair, footprint casts, and witness testimony. None of the material collected has been scientifically confirmed as belonging to an unknown primate. Researchers generally attribute sightings to misidentified Asian black bears, golden snub-nosed monkeys, or other wildlife moving through dense, rarely visited terrain, along with local storytelling traditions. Despite the lack of proof, the Yeren remains a significant subject of Chinese cryptozoology and has helped establish Shennongjia as a protected nature reserve popular with tourists.
