LOCATION
Why is Bhangarh said to be haunted?
Set at the edge of the Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan, the ruined town of Bhangarh is widely promoted as "the most haunted place in India," to the point that the Archaeological Survey of India posts signs forbidding visitors from entering after sunset or before sunrise. According to the best-known version of its legend, the town's destruction in the 17th century was caused by a curse laid by a tantrik sorcerer named Singhiya, who fell in love with the beautiful princess Ratnavati and tried to enchant her with a love potion; when the plot was discovered and the sorcerer killed, he cursed the town so that no roof would ever again stand over it, and no one would be able to live there. Visitors and guides describe the ruined temples, palace, and havelis as unnervingly silent, with reports of disembodied voices, sudden temperature drops, and a persistent sense of being watched among the abandoned stone streets.
