Why is Shaniwar Wada said to be haunted?

Built in 1732 as the seat of the Peshwas who led the Maratha Confederacy, Shaniwar Wada in Pune, India, is remembered today as much for a murder as for its politics. In 1773, the teenage Peshwa Narayanrao was reportedly stabbed to death within the fort's walls in a palace conspiracy involving his own relatives, after guards mistook a shouted order and turned on him. Legend holds that on full moon nights his desperate final cry, "Kaka mala vachva" ("Uncle, save me"), can still be heard echoing through the ruins. The fortress itself was largely gutted by an unexplained fire in 1828, leaving only its massive stone gates and foundations standing amid gardens now maintained as a tourist site. Local guides and visitors continue to report the phantom cry around the anniversary of the murder, cementing Shaniwar Wada's reputation as one of India's most talked-about haunted monuments.
