Why is Kuldhara said to be haunted?
In the desert district of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, Kuldhara stands as one of India's most famous abandoned villages, founded around the 13th century by Paliwal Brahmins who built a prosperous settlement on trade and agriculture in an unforgiving landscape. By the early 19th century, its roughly 1,500 residents had vanished overnight, leaving houses, temples, and streets intact but empty. The most widely repeated explanation blames Salim Singh, a powerful and predatory minister of the Jaisalmer state, who is said to have desired the village headman's daughter and threatened to tax the community into ruin unless she was handed over; rather than submit, the villagers reportedly fled en masse under cover of darkness, cursing the land so that it could never be resettled. Visitors and ghost tourism guides today describe strange sounds and unexplained figures among the ruins, and the Rajasthan government has developed the site for tourism while leaving the eerie silence of its empty lanes largely undisturbed.
