What is Boitatá?

The Boitatá is a legendary fire serpent from Brazilian folklore, often described as a giant snake made of flame or with glowing eyes that slithers across fields and swamps at night, sometimes said to have devoured the eyes of animals that died in a great flood, which is why it glows. Its name derives from Tupi words meaning roughly "fiery thing," and the earliest written trace dates to 1560, when Jesuit missionary José de Anchieta, writing from São Vicente, recorded indigenous accounts of a terrifying entity that "affirms to be mbaé tatá," or "thing entirely of fire," sliding over the ground as a flashing beam of flame. Later reinterpreted by settlers as a protector of the forests and grasslands who punishes those who set fires to clear land, sightings across rural Brazil, especially in the south, have long been reported as balls or trails of light moving low over fields at night. The most widely accepted rational explanation is the natural phenomenon of will-o'-the-wisp, glowing marsh gas produced by decomposing organic matter, along with ball lightning and bioluminescent insects.
