What is the legend of Saci-Pererê?
The Saci-Pererê is one of the best-loved figures in Brazilian folklore, a mischievous one-legged imp with dark skin who smokes a pipe and wears a magical red cap. He is said to spin inside whirlwinds, and whoever manages to seize his cap can force him to grant wishes; without it he loses his power. He is not exactly evil, but he adores playing pranks: souring milk, hiding household objects, spooking horses and tangling their manes, burning food and leading travelers astray in the woods. Born from the blending of Tupí-Guaraní Indigenous traditions and African ones brought by the enslaved, the Saci mostly appears in the south and southeast of Brazil. To be rid of him people suggest throwing a rosary at him or trapping him inside a bottle. He is so popular that Brazil celebrates 'Saci Day' every October 31 as a national answer to Halloween. He embodies the cunning and mocking wisdom of the Brazilian countryside.
