What is Mapinguari?
The Mapinguari is a giant, foul-smelling, one-eyed humanoid or ape-like beast said to roam the deep Amazon rainforest across Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia, described by indigenous and rural communities as covered in thick reddish or shaggy fur, walking upright, and emitting a stench so strong it can stun or repel anyone who encounters it. Amazonian oral tradition, rooted in Tupi-Guarani and other indigenous cultures, portrays it as a fierce forest guardian, and reports of tracks, roars, and encounters have circulated among rubber tappers and rural settlers since at least the 19th century. In 1994, Brazilian museum zoologist David Oren argued in a Goeldi Museum monograph that the Mapinguari could be a surviving ground sloth, and spent years collecting witness accounts; hunter Mário Pereira de Souza described his 1975 encounter to researchers: "The horrible smell entered into me and made me dizzy," he said, recalling he was unwell for two months afterward. No physical evidence has confirmed the theory, and a more grounded explanation points to sightings of giant anteaters or spectacled bears misidentified in low visibility, amplified through storytelling.
