What is Encantado?
The Encantado is a shapeshifting river spirit from Amazonian folklore, said to live in an enchanted underwater city and to surface disguised as an Amazon river dolphin, or boto. By night, tradition holds, the Encantado takes the form of a handsome stranger in white linen and a hat, who appears at riverside dances and festivals to seduce young women, always leaving before dawn and always keeping his hat on to hide the blowhole hidden in his hair. The belief is documented among riverine communities of the Brazilian Amazon since at least the late 19th century, and unexplained pregnancies were traditionally blamed on an Encantado's visit rather than acknowledged locally. A commonly repeated warning among river families goes: "Never point at the boto, or it will follow you home in your dreams." Killing or harming a river dolphin was considered deeply unlucky for the same reason. Anthropologists read the Encantado as a culturally sanctioned explanation for infidelity and unplanned pregnancy in tight-knit communities, alongside genuine reverence for the boto, an intelligent, pink-skinned animal now protected by Brazilian law and threatened by dam construction and fishing bycatch across its river range.
