What is the legend of Boitatá, the Fire Serpent?
The Boitatá is one of Brazil's oldest legends, told by Indigenous peoples long before the Portuguese arrived. Its Tupí name means 'fire serpent', and it is described as a giant snake with huge luminous eyes, or as a great serpent made of flame that glides across the fields on dark nights. According to the myth, after a great flood covered the earth, one snake survived by crawling through the darkness and eating the eyes of dead animals; the light gathered from those eyes turned it into a being of fire that can no longer live except in the gloom. The Boitatá protects the fields and forests: it chases and punishes those who set forest fires or harm nature, blinding them, driving them mad or reducing them to ash. Many believe the fleeting lights sometimes seen floating over damp grasslands are its trail. It is an ecological myth that teaches respect for the land and for fire.
