What is Curupira?

The Curupira is a small forest spirit from Brazilian indigenous, mainly Tupi, folklore, depicted as a boy or man with fiery red hair and, most distinctively, feet turned backward, so his footprints mislead anyone trying to track or hunt him through the jungle. He is regarded as the guardian of the forest and its animals, punishing hunters, loggers, and travelers who harm nature excessively, disorienting them until they wander in circles or luring them away with whistles and mimicked voices. The earliest written record dates to 1560, in a letter the Jesuit missionary José de Anchieta sent from São Vicente describing "certain demons, which the Brazilians call corupira, that often attack Indians in the bush, wound them with the whip, tormenting and killing them." The figure later blended with Afro-Brazilian and Portuguese folk elements into the version widely known today across Brazil. Modern folklorists read the Curupira as an early conservationist archetype encoding respect for sustainable hunting and forest limits long before formal environmental laws existed, while skeptics attribute reported encounters to disorientation in dense terrain.
