What is Nahual?

The Nahual (or nagual) is a shapeshifting figure from Mesoamerican folklore, typically a human sorcerer believed capable of transforming into an animal, most often a jaguar, dog, owl, or other creature associated with night and mischief. Rooted in pre-Columbian Nahua and Maya beliefs about a spiritual animal companion linked to each person's fate, the concept survived colonization; one of the earliest detailed Spanish accounts appears in 1629, when priest Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón documented nahualismo among indigenous communities of Guerrero in his 'Treatise on the Heathen Superstitions,' written to help other clergy identify and suppress it. The belief blended with Catholic ideas of witchcraft, evolving in many communities into tales of malevolent nahuales who curse neighbors, steal livestock, or prowl villages at night. Stories are especially strong across rural Mexico and Guatemala, where certain families are still rumored to possess the ability, and where killing the animal form is said to kill the human. Anthropologists interpret nahualismo as a rich framework for explaining misfortune and the porous boundary between human and animal worlds.
