In Zulu tradition across KwaZulu-Natal, families still raise their beds on bricks, a practice documented by anthropologists since at least the 1930s and still visible in South African homes today, to keep sleepers out of reach of the Tokoloshe, a short, hairy, mischievous spirit summoned by jealous neighbors or spurned sangomas to torment a household. Believers describe it as invisible to adults unless a special ointment is applied to the eyes, though children are said to see it plainly, pinching feet and whispering through the night: "raise the bed, and it cannot reach your toes." Court records from the 20th century occasionally reference Tokoloshe accusations in disputes between neighbors, underscoring how the belief carried real social weight as an accepted explanation for misfortune, illness, or unexplained noises.
