Why is St Catherine's School, Germiston said to be haunted?
On the night of 17 August 1972, a janitor cleaning the school hall at St Catherine's claimed he was chased into the quad by a grey, shapeless form with glowing red eyes. The story might have faded there, but from early 1977 a wave of new sightings swept the school: pupils and staff reported a hooded figure wrapped in flowing grey robes gliding through the hall, the chapel, the basement and classrooms in the eastern wing, often trailed by a low wailing sound. Someone nicknamed the presence 'Patrick,' after St Patrick's house, and the name stuck. Sightings tapered off after 1977, but alumnae still swap Patrick stories decades later โ footsteps in empty corridors, cold spots near the chapel, doors that will not stay shut. No one has ever explained who, or what, Patrick was meant to be.
