Why is Somerset Hospital (Cape Town) said to be haunted?
Opened in 1864 in Green Point, Somerset Hospital is South Africa's oldest hospital — and, according to generations of nurses, one of its most haunted. The ward corridors are said to be walked at night by Sister Helen Bowden, matron in the late 19th century after being sent from London's Florence Nightingale School to train Cape nurses; staff have long claimed to feel her checking on patients when no living nurse is on the round. A second figure, a nurse with pale, empty-looking eyes, reportedly appears beside frightened patients before vanishing without a word. A Facebook group for the hospital's ghost stories has drawn more than 18,000 followers swapping accounts of footsteps, cold wards and a blonde girl seen combing her hair in an empty room. None of it is documented history — just decades of hospital-floor folklore that refuses to die.
