Why is Castle of Good Hope said to be haunted?
The Castle of Good Hope has stood watch over Cape Town since Dutch engineers completed its five bastions in 1679, and its dungeons still draw more attention than its ramparts. Guides and former staff have long reported a figure known as the "Grey Lady," sometimes linked to a woman who died within its walls in the 18th century, seen drifting along the upper corridors near the Castle Military Museum before vanishing. Security guards over the decades have logged unexplained footsteps crossing the courtyard after closing, and a phantom Great Dane is said to patrol the grounds near the "Black Hole," a windowless dungeon used for solitary confinement. One 19th-century watchman reportedly quit after describing "a cold hand" pressing against his shoulder in the empty guardroom.
