What is the legend of The Tokoloshe?

In the folklore of the Zulu and Xhosa peoples of southern Africa, the Tokoloshe is a small, hairy, mischievous water sprite that can turn its malice deadly. Described as a dwarfish, gremlin-like being with a mischievous grin, it is said to be conjured or sent by a malevolent sorcerer to torment enemies. The Tokoloshe slips into homes at night to frighten children, sour milk, cause illness, or strangle sleepers in the dark. Belief in it runs deep enough that people across South Africa have traditionally raised their beds on bricks, keeping the mattress out of reach of the low-standing creature. Some tales say it can become invisible by swallowing a stone, and that it preys especially on those who have wronged others. Sangomas, traditional healers, are called upon to drive it away with rituals and protective charms. Whether understood as a literal being, an explanation for sleep paralysis and misfortune, or a warning about the dangers of witchcraft, the Tokoloshe remains one of the most feared figures in southern African tradition.
