What is Impundulu?
Among Xhosa and Zulu communities of South Africa's Eastern Cape, the Impundulu, or lightning bird, is described as a black-and-white bird able to transform into a handsome man, sent by witches to drink the blood of enemies and summon storms with a single wingbeat. Missionary and colonial records from the 1800s note that lightning strikes killing livestock or people were frequently attributed to an Impundulu dispatched by a rival, and traditional healers were paid to identify and neutralize the responsible witch: "where it lands, the sky itself answers with fire." The bird was said to pass down through generations of women in a family, an inherited familiar rather than a wild animal, binding the legend tightly to real inheritance disputes and accusations of witchcraft that occasionally turned violent. Ornithologists have suggested ground hornbills, with their striking black plumage and booming calls, may have anchored the image in an actual, unsettling bird.
