Wolpertinger

The Wolpertinger is a fantastical chimera-like creature from Bavarian folklore, traditionally depicted as a small mammal, often based on a hare, fitted with an outlandish combination of antlers, bird wings, fangs, and sometimes webbed feet or a tail, giving it a comically monstrous appearance. It is said to lurk in the dense alpine forests of Bavaria, hidden by day and emerging at dusk, and local lore claims it can only be caught by a naive hunter armed with salt, a sack, and a lantern, luring the creature by whistling or, in some versions, using a young woman as bait. The legend as told today took shape in the early 1800s, when Bavarian taxidermists began stitching hare, bird, and deer parts into stuffed "jackalope"-style curiosities to tease gullible travelers, building on older 17th-century woodcuts of horned hares. Stuffed specimens are still displayed proudly in Bavarian inns and museums, most famously Munich's Deutsches Jagd- und Fischereimuseum. Naturalists recognize it as playful invented folklore, though a real disease, Shope papillomavirus, does cause horn-like growths on rabbits and may have inspired similar legends elsewhere. Today the Wolpertinger functions mainly as a beloved regional mascot, cheerfully embraced rather than seriously believed in.
