Why is Frankenstein Castle said to be haunted?
Frankenstein Castle sits on a wooded ridge above Darmstadt in Germany's Odenwald, its ruins dating to around 1250. Its enduring fame rests on Johann Konrad Dippel, an alchemist and theologian born there in 1673 who later conducted grim experiments with animal cadavers and claimed to have invented an "elixir of life," a reputation some researchers believe reached Mary Shelley during her 1814 travels along the Rhine, three years before she wrote Frankenstein. Local legend adds a knight who slew a dragon at the castle spring and a ghostly monk said to wander the ruins at night. Since the 1970s, the castle has hosted an annual Halloween "Burg Frankenstein Fright Night," drawing actors and thousands of visitors to a site locals had already whispered about for generations.
