Why is Whatipu said to be haunted?
Whatipu sits at the wild southern edge of the Waitākere Ranges, where the Manukau Harbour meets the Tasman Sea across one of the most treacherous stretches of water in New Zealand, the Manukau Bar. It was here, in February 1863, that the Royal Navy corvette HMS Orpheus struck a sandbar in heavy surf and broke apart, killing 189 of the 259 men aboard in what remains New Zealand's deadliest maritime disaster; many bodies washed ashore along this coastline in the days that followed. Decades later the beach and surrounding bush also hosted a busy kauri logging operation, its abandoned tramline and the ruins of an old boarding house still visible among the dunes. Trampers who camp near the old lodge site after dark report a persistent sense of being watched from the direction of the bar, and some fishermen say they have heard men's voices calling faintly over the surf on rough nights, attributed by local tradition to the Orpheus dead who never made it to shore.
