Why is Larnach Castle said to be haunted?
William Larnach, a wealthy banker and politician, spared no expense building his hilltop mansion on the Otago Peninsula from 1871, importing marble from Italy, glass from Venice, and craftsmen from Europe for what became known, somewhat loosely, as "New Zealand's only castle." Tragedy shadowed the family that lived there: Larnach's first wife, Eliza, died in 1880, followed by his second wife, Mary, in 1887, and his favorite daughter, Kate, also died young in the house. Larnach himself never died at the castle β in 1898, deep in debt and grieving, he shot himself in a committee room at Parliament in Wellington β but staff and visitors have long reported his presence lingering in the grand hall regardless, along with the sound of a woman's footsteps on the stairs, said to be Kate. After decades of neglect and use as an asylum annex and monastery, the Barker family restored the castle from 1967 and now run it as a tourist attraction.
